that's expected to take about a year. saving granny from the axe. >> looks like they did it. we just learned that a centuries old tree in san mateo county may be saved from the chopping block. kcbs radio's matt bigler reports. >> reporter: she is not getting chopped down. no construction will happen until at least next month. the chief of the san francisco public utilities commission will personally get involved in the dispute between granny and the water pipeline. he wants to find out why the utility decided the tree has it- to-go to make way for the pipeline. he is also apologizing to neighbors here about the way
6:40 am
they were notified that the tree trimming would happen on monday. neighbors were very upset that they say they were notified at the close of business last friday that the tree trimmers would be here first thing monday morning and that's when they mounted an all-out defense over the weekend to get the word out about granny. we talked to mary ann mulliner early. she says they see this tree as the matriarch of their community. >> this oak was one of the orange ancient forest oaks. it has value. it should have value to all of us. there are counties in the state where if you cut this down, you would be put in jail. >> reporter: nobody has been arrested yet but the utility is looking at two other options instead of removing the tree. the first one would be going under the tree. that might harm some of granny's root structures. so that's not necessarily the greatest option. the other is to go above ground to run that pipeline above ground at least for the extent
6:41 am
of where granny lives. the utility is not crazy about that option because of security concerns. this is a very important pipeline. it carries hetch hetchy water from the sierra to san francisco for all of san mateo county. it's structurally reinforced to prevent earthquake damage and so granny stands in the way of all that. but at least for now, no cut will go happen until at least june 6. that's the latest from here in menlo park. back to you guys. >> thank you. >> granny getting a little tlc. >> what about going around the tree? could they put a little diversion and go around it? >> reporter: i'm sure that's been looked at. my only guess is that because of the structure of the pipeline you can't just put a curve in it, i u joint and go around it. but i'm not sure. the two main options are under or above ground. and that's as much as i know about that. >> thank you, kcbs radio's matt bigler. finally matt gets a little good news. usually gets budgeted cuts or something like that. >> we did that story on monday
6:42 am

6:48 am
involving several cars and unfortunately our line of brake lights now includes some speeds under 25 miles per hour. and it's growing in those southbound lanes. once you get past a street heading toward 92 the san mateo bridge looks great. you can see there is no issues all across the span. it's about 13 minutes in these lanes in the commute direction westbound 92, 14-minute commute from hayward toward foster city and the peninsula. and coming off the high-rise things look great there, as well. we just got a call from steve with the kcbs phone force letting us know about a stall on the dumbarton bridge. sounds like it's a stalled taxicab actually. no backup yet. traffic still light heading into menlo park which is something to watch out for. so far no delay as you can do tell. cars heading towards the dumbarton bridge. nimitz 880 through oakland looks great in either direction past the coliseum. so a nice smooth ride in hayward towards downtown oakland. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. back to you.
